very excited to be joining these boys at sxsw this year. leo james conroy made his solo debut at sxsw in 2016 but returns to the stage this year with some help from his friends. i’ll be down there shooting some fun content for them so stay tuned for all things sxsw! below are some photos from the live session we recorded last month.
i am beyond excited about this album. yesterday, i listened to the antlers’ frontman, peter silberman talk with bob boilen about life, his return to music and his first solo album. back in 2014, peter lost his hearing in his left ear, forcing him to acquire a more quiet lifestyle leaving his friends, family and fans in the noisy world he once knew. after living in his new found silence, his hearing began to progress and he began playing music again… in a whole new way with a whole new sound.
i’m a big fan of libby vanderploeg’s work. my favorite corner in my room is home to one of her pieces from her collaboration with dusty rose vintage. libby has collaborated yet again but this time with music writer steve wide. together they released bowie a to z: the life of an icon from aladdinsane to ziggy stardust.- an alphabetical look at the extraordinary life of david bowie. i can’t wait to get my hands on this book. you can order your copy here.
in love with this gal. today she gave us a little taste of what to expect from her live at urchin studios album by releasing “for you”; the single off of the album. you can pre-order her album on itunes or listen to the single on spotify as part of my music monday playlist. for this playlist i’ve put together some tunes that i’ve been listening to lately… some old some new some rock and some blues. happy monday!
earlier this month i went to visit a friend in italy. i booked my ticket through kayak which had an amazing deal…the catch was a 21 hour layover in sweden going to and from italy…fine by me! i’ve always wanted to go to stockholm so it was nice to get to spend some time there and explore the city, even if it was for a hot second. in my first 20 minutes in stockholm, i stumbled upon a record store. i went in and asked the guys who worked there if they could recommend a good swedish album that i could buy. they showed me a couple of options and then both agreed on det stora monstret. i was anxious to listen to it, i figured these guys would either take this seriously or just give the “american” the worst record they could think of. thanks to them, i now own an amazing record and one of my favorite souveneirs. walking around gamla stan i was going in and out of all the shops and cafes. i took this after i had loaded up on all the swedish chocolates i was going to bring back to the states. i love that this picture makes it look like a ghost town when in reality everyone’s actually inside the candy shop…that place was a zoo but it sure was magical. shortly after, i began to crash…my jet lag was REAL and my tylenol cold was wearing off. i desperately wanted a nap. i found this little garden behind a building and laid on a bench for a bit. i sat listening to the sounds of the city, watching people pass through, i think i could’ve laid there forever.
this cafe made fresh squeezed orange juice and the kids inside were mesmerized. it was really sweet seeing their excitement.
ahhh karaoke, my favorite sport. get a couple of drinks in me and you might just get a full production- queue the lights and back up dancers. to me, there is nothing better than belting out your favorite songs with your friends (and sometimes strangers) over a drink or two…or four. i’m still looking for someone to duet stevie nicks’ “leather and lace” with me…consider this my personal ad. you can check out all my favorite karaoke songs on my spotify playlist below. please karaoke responsibly.
i’ve always loved the look of a piano in the house. unfortunately for me, i seem to be constantly moving all over la, so me trying to lug a piano from place to place doesn’t seem like the best idea. the grass is always greener on the other side and for me, it’s still greener-i want a damn piano. did i mention i taught myself hot cross buns on the piano? so if you ever find yourself needing a pianist, i am your girl…just for one song.
this video is just so damn good (insert slow clap here). yesterday, andrew bird released the video for his duet track featuring fiona apple. i couldn’t take my eyes off the two love angst musicians with their passionate back and forth banter. really looking forward to this new album come april 1st!
